There are around 2 million End of Life Vehicles (ELVs) per year of which 1.7 million are unserviceable old cars with little or no value. According to legislation, these End of Life Vehicles must undergo a detailed depollution by an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) before the car can be recycled, see ELV service.

Under these directives, producers of motor vehicles are obliged to meet the costs of depollution after 2007. Until this time it is the responsibility of the last owner of the vehicle to pay.

The Service
Our End of Life Vehicle depollution service ties in seamlessly to providing the solution to Abandoned Vehicles. Working with strategic business partnerships, we offer a complete collection service for abandoned and untaxed cars placing them in secure storage, for statutory periods, before they then enter our depollution and recycling process.

This partnership strategy also allows Sims Metal Management to offer extensive service coverage for the Abandoned Vehicle scheme, since our partners add to our own large network of sites.

We have also developed a database system that records and monitors all information requirements relating to the collection of abandoned vehicles and provides automatic updates to key stakeholders.

Sims Metal Management is therefore ideally placed to offer Local Authorities solutions for the growing number of Abandoned Vehicles littering our streets and countryside.

Case Study
The Sims Metal Management is currently working with a number of Local Authorities and significant numbers of Abandoned Vehicles have already been recovered and, where appropriate, depolluted and recycled.

An example of this commitment is demonstrated by our approach to the management of the Abandoned Vehicle Contract for Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. It is predicted that over 1500 vehicles will be abandoned within Doncaster this year and in order to reduce this impact we ensure that all of the vehicles are removed within 24 hours and placed into secure storage. This scheme has been shown to substantially reduce the number of abandoned vehicle burn outs and acts of vandalism associated with these cars.

Within this proactive partnership Doncaster Council and Sims Metal Management have developed and implemented a voluntary surrender scheme which proactive solution to the anticipated increase in the number of abandoned vehicles.
