Under new European directives, producers of motor vehicles
will be obliged to meet the costs of recovery and recycling
of End of Life Vehicles as of 2007. Until this time the last
owner of the vehicle will pay.
Tough depollution and recovery targets are imposed on End
of Life Vehicles. Sims Recycling Solutions has acted proactively
by investing in depollution technology in order to develop
best practice recovery operations. Specifically, innovative
trials are underway to recover and market hitherto landfilled
waste streams. Our objective is to provide a service to meet
the demands of manufacturing industry and local authorities
in a cost effective, environmentally sound and legislatively
compliant manner.

Legislation
There are around 2 million End of Life Vehicles
per year of which 1.7 million are unserviceable old
cars with little or no value. According to the legislation,
these End of Life Vehicles must undergo a detailed
depollution by an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF)
before the car can be scrapped. Substances covered
in this depollution include: tyres, fuels, oils, batteries,
anti-freeze, pyrotechnics, etc.

Service
Sims Recycling Solutions has carried out extensive
trials on ELV depollution. More than 14,000 ELVs have
been depolluted in extensive trials in our state of
the art facility in Avonmouth. Further trial facilities
are about to be commissioned with more being planned
for other key sites around the country. This research
work is allowing us to fully understand costs and potential
markets for recyclates.

Location
Our plan is to have numerous Authorised Treatment Facilities in
place at our various sites. We have also set up strategic partnerships
with other business to ensure our coverage for customers is as extensive
as possible. We are well placed to offer Local Authorities solutions
for the growing number of abandoned vehicles littering our streets and
countryside.
