Originally developed to separate minerals in the mining industry, Dense Media Separation (DMS) has since successfully been adapted by the materials recycling industry. The process has been refined through technical investment and systems management and now Sims Recycling Solutions can offer customers the very best in processing standards. Our products, marketed worldwide, demonstrate the highest quality levels.

Location
Sims Recycling Solutions’ Dense Media Separation plant near Stratford-upon-Avon is well placed to serve the whole of the UK materials recovery market. It is also conveniently placed for the main UK container ports, through which much of the recovered metal is exported.

The Process
The DMS plant was adapted specifically for the recovery of non-ferrous metals – chiefly from the non-ferrous by-product resulting from the shredding of End of Life Vehicles and other End of Life goods.

From this conglomerate, many metals are recovered and separated, including aluminium, copper, brass, zinc and stainless steel. A variety of methods for the separation of these metals, both from impurities and from each other, is used. However, the core of the plant uses a liquid of varying densities to literally float metals away from each other. We are continually refining our separation techniques to recover discrete quantities of plastics, stone, glass and other materials.

Plant Development
We have continued to invest heavily in the process since its implementation. The main objective of this investment has been to improve the efficiency of metal recovery from mixed shredder waste. We recover maximum metal at minimum cost to ensure that our valued suppliers receive the benefits of our efficiency.

Continued investment in the latest separation technologies ensure that our metal products continue to be of the quality that our valued customers require. The operations’ quality controlled process means our customers can be assured of products that are consistent to their specification.

Ongoing research at the plant is continuing to find new product uses for items such as plastics and glass. This is in line with Sims Recycling Solutions’ strategy on meeting customer needs with regards to European directives on End of Life Vehicles, Fridges and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
